“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”
1st Sunday of Elijah, 21 August 2016
1st Reading/Isaiah 31: 1-10
A reading from the Prophecy of Isaiah Barikhmar
Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who depend upon horses: Who put their trust in chariots because of their number, and in horsemen because of their combined power, but look not to the Holy One of Israel nor seek the LORD! Yet he too is wise and will bring disaster; he will not turn from what he has threatened to do. He will rise up against the house of the wicked and against those who help evildoers. The Egyptians are men, not God, their horses are flesh, not spirit; When the LORD stretches forth his hand, the helper shall stumble, the one helped shall fall, and both of them shall perish together. Thus says the LORD to me: As a lion or a lion cub growling over its prey, With a band of shepherds assembled against it, Is neither frightened by their shouts nor disturbed by their noise, So shall the LORD of hosts come down to wage war upon the mountain and hill of Zion. Like hovering birds, so the LORD of hosts shall shield Jerusalem, to protect and deliver, to spare and rescue it. Return, O children of Israel, to him whom you have utterly deserted. On that day each one of you shall spurn his sinful idols of silver and gold, which he made with his hands. Assyria shall fall by a sword not wielded by man,. no mortal sword shall devour him; He shall flee before the sword, and his young men shall be impressed as laborers. He shall rush past his crag in panic, and his princes shall flee in terror from his standard, Says the LORD who has a fire in Zion and a furnace in Jerusalem
2nd Reading / 2 Thessalonians 1: 1-12
A reading from the Second Letter of St. Paul to Thessalonians “Barichmar
Paul, Silas and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace and peace to you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing. Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring. All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you. With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Reader: The grace and peace be with you all brothers. Amen.
Gospel Reading/ Luke 19:1-10
A reading from the Gospel of Saint Luke
Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a `sinner.’ ” But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.” Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”
Priest: Glory be to God for ever.
Response: Lord hear our prayer
Heavenly Father, We ask that your Holy Spirit over-flows this church and it’s congregation, it’s elders and it’s youth. We ask for pouring out of the gifts of the Spirit over this nation. Guiding us day and night so that we may always fall in the path that you’ve set for us on this earth. We pray to the Lord.
Lord Jesus, you said to your apostles “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you might say unto this tree be plucked up by the root and be planted in the sea, and it should obey you”, Jesus we ask you, by grace, to strengthen our faith, everyday, that we may do your will and glorify your name. We pray to the Lord
Father God, We ask that you bless all the fathers on this earth, especially the fathers to be… this Father’s day… We ask you to continue to bless them, shower them with your gifts, wrap them with your protection and plant in them courage and faith like ٍSt. Joseph … We ask this in Christ our Lord…
Heavenly Father, We pray for those who suffer on a daily basis especially the sick, the hurting and dying, let your merciful and healing touch fall on them, resting their mind, soul and body. We pray to the Lord.
