3rd Sunday of Consecration of the Church

18 November 2018

The Idea of Ritual:

The prayers for this third Sunday, the Sunday of Consecration the Church invites us to meditate on Christ, the new temple of God, and to follow him and renew our thoughts and hearts so that we become proper temples.

Readings:

1st Reading/ Num 7: 1-11

Please sit and listen to the reading from the Book of Numbers “Barick-Mar”

Now, when Moses had completed the erection of the tabernacle, he anointed and consecrated it with all its equipment, as well as the altar with all its equipment. After he anointed and consecrated them, an offering was made by the tribal leaders of Israel, who were heads of ancestral houses, the same leaders of the tribes who supervised those enrolled. The offering they brought before the LORD consisted of six wagons for baggage and twelve oxen, that is, a wagon for every two tribal leaders, and an ox for each. These they presented before the tabernacle. The LORD then said to Moses: Accept their offering, that these things may be put to use to maintain the tent of meeting. Assign them to the Levites, to each according to his duties. So, Moses accepted the wagons and oxen, and assigned them to the Levites. He gave two wagons and four oxen to the Gershonites according to their duties, and four wagons and eight oxen to the Merarites according to their duties, under the supervision of Ithamar, son of Aaron the priest. He gave none to the Kohathites, because they were responsible for maintenance of the sacred objects that had to be carried on their shoulders. For the dedication of the altar also, the tribal leaders brought offerings when it was anointed; the leaders presented their offering before the altar. But the LORD said to Moses: Let one leader each day present his offering for the dedication of the altar. Amen.

2nd Reading / Heb 9: 5-14

A reading from the Letter of St. Paul to Hebrews: “Barick-Mar”

Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the place of expiation. Now is not the time to speak of these in detail. With these arrangements for worship, the priests, in performing their service, go into the outer tabernacle repeatedly, but the high priest alone goes into the inner one once a year, not without blood that he offers for himself and for the sins of the people. In this way, the Holy Spirit shows that the way into the sanctuary had not yet been revealed while the outer tabernacle still had its place. This is a symbol of the present time, in which gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the worshiper in conscience but only in matters of food and drink and various ritual washings: regulations concerning the flesh, imposed until the time of the new order. But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come to be, passing through the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made by hands, that is, not belonging to this creation, he entered once for all into the sanctuary, not with the blood of goats and calves but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of a heifer’s ashes can sanctify those who are defiled so that their flesh is cleansed, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works to worship the living God.

The grace and peace be with you all brothers. Amen.

Gospel Reading/ Jn2: 12-22

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to St John.

After this, he and his mother, [his] brothers, and his disciples went down to Capernaum and stayed there only a few days. Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money-changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” His disciples recalled the words of scripture, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” At this, the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.

Priest: Glory be to God forever...PP: Glory be to Christ Our Lord.

 Prayers of the Faithful

Let us all stand with joy and ask with confidence, saying,

O Lord, have mercy on us.

O Lord, we pray you grant us the grace you were given so we become apostles for love, happiness, peace, and brotherhood among all people. We ask you.

O Lord, we pray that we move past our selfish ways to serve others and lessen their burdens by implanting joyfulness and hope in their lives. We ask you.

O Lord, we pray that you help us fight against any temptations that encourage us to show off and boast. Instead, we ask that our relationships are full of blessings that we can spread out to the rest of the world. We ask you.
